Earlier I wrote, but decided not to post, about The Trial of Socrates being the book I chose to read instead of the Bible or any other religious text. It's been over twenty years since I've read it, but I remember being fascinated by "The Crito", when Socrates' friend, Crito, tries to persuade him to escape from his impending execution, and Socrates refuses, because as an Athenian, who benefited from the fruits of Athens, he must obey Athenian law, and by Athenian law he was found guilty and sentenced to drink hemlock. In Hitchens' case, I think, he simply decided to escape. (I may be misrepresenting "The Crito", like I said, I read it over two decades ago, so please correct me, or refresh my memory if you're familiar with the text.) --------------------- |
