I think the obvious reason that they didn't take refuge in Russia and China was because they didn't speak Russian nor Chinese... but seriously, most or many of the rebels were equally against the USSR and PRC, since both were Imperialists -- leaving the fighters and rebels to prefer "The Third Way": "NEITHER EAST, NEITHER WEST" being their slogan and their plan... which turned to SHI'ITE SHIT... unfortunately.
