True. All you have to do is look at statistics. Before Constantine converted for political reasons and made the religion official and mandatory for all his citizens, Christianity was very small and hardly anyone was converting except for the few oddballs, as you said. The Christians were accused of cannibalism and all kinds of things and the Europeans thought of them as lunatics, which they were and still are. But things changed when it was no longer an option and Christianity became official. It was only then that it grew to what it is. It was less than five % of the population before Constantine. That's all we need to know. And we know what they did in the new world and in asia. Judaism was actually more successful in gaining converts than Christianity was. As you said, not entire nations but few here and there. I was reading a book about Philippines and at one point before the Christians arrived and conquered it, something like 90 % of the population was Muslim. The islands even had a Muslim name(island of the faithful). Muslims and the remaining Buddhists lived together without problems. The Spanish forcefully converted them for the most part. The Portuguese tried it in Indonesia with the Muslims there but didn't work --------------------- |
