“Their religious leaders, recognized by the state as leaders of the community, preached the necessity of obedience and promised the consolation of a better world hereafter.”

This is the basis of state-support given to Christianity, in particular, and its appeal to Constantine, who knew a good thing when he saw it…the teaching that you have to accept your lot in this life, if you want the “blessings” of the hereafter…where all will be made up to you.

“Their efforts to rationalize or justify their second-class status led the majority to a theology and folklore that emphasized the superiority of their faith over Islam, and of Jesus over Muhammad.”

There is a world in that statement. Had these heretical sects been allowed to exist among orthodox Christianity, as second-class citizens, they would have felt “their” Jesus was superior to the orthodox Jesus. But, living among Muslims, they naturally compensated by thinking Jesus and their own view of him superior to Islam and Muhammad.

To digress for a moment; the one constant and undeniable quality in all our nationalists is a gaping hole where their self-esteem should be. They do not have to be religious to resent the feeling that they, as even marginal Christians, were second-class citizens in the Muslim countries of their birth. This fact, no matter how little they actually suffered from it (even if they never experienced at all), or how many fellow Christians prospered in spite of it, remained a good excuse for their personal failures or their lack of initiative because they would have failed “anyway”, no matter how talented and capable. The vast majority of them, Peter Jassim, Aprim, Rosie, Magpie etc. have not the inner resources, talent, luck, dedication etc. to achieve distinction on their own. Accustomed to blaming Islam for making them “second-class”, they became even more embittered when they found themselves unable to attain to any grand level in the Arab-free West, commensurate with their estimation of their self-worth…where they were finally freed from the restrictions imposed on them by “perfidious” Islam, which they were encouraged and grew accustomed to blaming for their own shortcomings.

Now that their all-inclusive excuse is gone through their residence in the West…now that no Muslim can be blamed for their woeful condition, for their lack of achievement…they become almost vicious in their anger at Islam for having caused their “ruin” anyway…so that even once freed of its direct impact, they curse it all the more for having “emasculated” them before letting them go. It is this “they-hurt-me-so-bad-I can-never-make-good” that drives them to demonize Islam…as a way of preventing outsiders from reminding them that their excuse is gone so,”what now…where are your achievements now”?

This also drives them to demand a country or territory of their own. Reading between the lines you get the impression, once again, that it is this lack, this not having a Christian country that would have, supposedly, nourished and nurtured or, at least, protected them from second-class status, which kept them down and under. It is significant that very few to none of the Christians actually in Iraq wish for this…rather it is the demand of those Christians leading undistinguished lives in the West where their previous distinction as a “superior” minority means nothing in countries crawling with Christians, who can no longer blame Islam and COULD, finally, “blossom” under Christian toleration…strive instead to make their personal failings the result of politics and religious persecution, pointing to their “dhimmi” status and constant “massacres” etc…claiming to have internalized inferiority to the point where only a “nation of our own” will compensate them and finally allow them to do those great things which Muslims kept them from achieving..

Rosie Malek-Yonan is a good example…though Peter Jassim’s execrable poetry is right behind. Rosie has achieved a level of distinction in her profession which is probably not commensurate with what she feels she deserved…what she imagined for herself and hoped for…certainly what she would have preferred. I know the feeling.

One striking difference between sculpture and theater is that I can make sculpture to my dying day…and can make it on my own, any time I want to….while Rosie, as an actor, needs to win a role…needs an entire industry and its acceptance before she even gets to act…she can’t very well act in front of a mirror and expect to get anywhere…while I can make sculpture in the privacy of my studio, “in front of a mirror”, with no involvement or need of anything…and I’m just as likely to be successful with any particular piece at 30 years of age as I might be at 70, perhaps more so…whereas we all now that actresses get less and less opportunity as they grow older.

Time, in one sense, has run out for Rosie…as an actor….as a professional. But another opportunity opened up…Rosie could write a “book”…could fill it with the horror stories at the hands of Islam we’ve plucked out of context…beefed up and sprinkled with purple prose…to be hailed as hero and champion among “her people” in ways she never was in the world at large, or even among us, as an actor…

And the best way to move us is to tell, all over again, the account of “all we suffered” under “cruel” Islam….which, according to Rosie, has been gunning for us even before the Conquest…begging right at the moment Muhammad dictated the Quran. The one road open to distinction among us is to demonize Islam…and the way to gain the enmity of us all is to attempt to be fair and accurate…for that makes one a “lover” of Islam…instead of dedicated to the simple, though unflattering, truth.
