“The Crusaders, whose presence lasted for two centuries, were to influence Christian-Muslim relations for centuries to come, leaving behind a legacy of mistrust and antagonism that would be revived in modern times. The Middle Eastern Christians were to pay a heavy penalty for the sympathy that some of them had towards their coreligionists from the West. The fear of a counteroffensive drove the Muslims against their Christian subjects, especially those who had spiritual and cultural connections with the Christian powers.” How come Fox News never mentions this? “The crusading European kings and feudal lords realized very early in their conquests the importance of a native Christian population upon whose loyalty they could rely. King Baldwin I and his nobles soon discovered that they could not establish themselves without the native Christian population which had recently deserted the place, fleeing to Egypt before the Turkish armies.” Here lies the tragedy that has dogged our people to the present day. We have allowed ourselves to be used by the foreigners who fought with and killed our fellow citizens, tempted to their aid by the religion we shared albeit as heretics, their need of us and the concessions they seemed willing to make in order to enlist our loyal services. Since no Christian conquest has ever been permanent we paid a heavy price in retaliation at the hands of the returning Muslims who, quite naturally and legitimately, looked upon us as traitors, collaborators and opportunists…making it all the more likely that the next time war loomed, they thought it expedient to punish us ahead of time by removing us from the borders where we might again welcome and aid invasion. “The natives were especially needed for their services as traders and craftsmen. It was thus decided to invite the refugees back to settle in Jerusalem. Tempted by Baldwin’s offers, large numbers of Orthodox and non-Orthodox Christians of Syria came back or emigrated for the first time to their holy city, where a number of concessions and privileges awaited them.” How could they have resisted the offer? They were the brothers of the Muslims in all things save religion…that pernicious invention of Humans which has divided us from each other at our very core. When both Muslim and Christian were suffering alike their losses…a hand was held out to the Christians by the very people despoiling their lands…and they took it. As understandable as it is… still, one has to accept that it is equally understandable that their Muslim neighbors would resent it and seek revenge. --------------------- |
