That is the whole point because Christians have a huge record of wiping away other Christians with the sharp blades of their swords. This Sunni and Shia dilemma is very recent in Iraq and Pakistan which is certainly fueled by the west. Even if they have fought few battles in the past over power etc, they never targeted civilians, children, homes, mosques etc. No educated Sunni rejects or denies a Shia from being Muslim but educated Christians will refer to another Christian from across the street as a disbeliever and worse.

The two can never be compared because Sunni Muslims have always been the majority and never made an effort like the church to go after other groups whom it viewed as heretical. Sunnis could have eliminated Shias a long time ago because they were never a huge or a majority but it never came to that. It is more of a political dispute and not so much theological. The Ottoman empire never distinguished between Shia and Sunni but both were labeled Muslims. There is Wahabbis who are very nasty toward Shias but even they don't go as far as killing them, blowing up their mosques, etc. They just refuse to pray next to them as if Shias would want them to anyway, huh? My last days of Islam, I told a friend of mine that I would pray next to a pig before I pray next to a Wahabbi.
