Unfortunately as they say, the patients have taken over the asylum, and by that I mean the most extremist religious charlatans have become incredibly powerful. In Iran it began with the revolution in 1979, in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as Pakistani analyst pointed out, the clerics were a minor group who were the butt of most jokes, who now are taking over the country and the region. This was true in Iran before the revolution, when clerics were made fun of and ridiculed, and rightly so. The same is true of Israel with the ultra-Orthodox Haredi, who are now a powerful voice as are the Christian Right in our own country, pushing politicians to pass laws favoring their puritanical world view and demonizing the rest of us and our life styles. What's troubling is that all of these fuckers have both financial backing and armies of young, disaffected men (and women) who've given up on reason and accepted bullshit absolutes pontificated by these pimps of unreason where objective proof is based on subjective faith "I believe, therefore I am". George Santayana said that those who don't know history are bound to repeat it. And we are seeing a new version of feudalism, what Chris Hedges correctly calls neo-Feudalism, except instead of the nobility we have a neoliberal capitalist class in cahoots with religious charlatans hungry for power no matter at what cost, with the rest of us, whether Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist-born, playing the part of modern serfs, divided and ruled over by a powerful few who want nothing more than us being at each other's throats for a loaf of bread, while they stuff their gluttonous vile faces with endless riches of the world... all the while destroying nature, our one and only mother. --------------------- |
