You forgot to mention fear of the Puerto Ricans, the Black Planet, illegal Mexican laborers, Mexican Drug Cartels, Mexicans, unions, teachers, reading, thinking, connecting with like-minded folks on an internet forum... I live in a Japanese neighborhood where about 80% or more of the residents are the children or grandchildren of Japanese-Americans (both natural born and naturalized) who were rounded up and shoved into "internment camps" during WWII. After they were released by the benevolent victors, they came back to their homes and small business which line the street with beautiful garden nurseries, family-owned shops, wonderful restaurants, and of course, karaoke bars. Since the day of the catasrophe, I've been reluctant to walk down the street, visit my favoirte stores, etc., not knowning what the vibe would be of the people on the sidewalk - many of whom come to this tiny neigborhood when they visit Los Angeles. I went to buy green tea from the lady who greets me with a jasmine smile as we bow in synch each time I enter her store. This time she slumped down, tears in her eyes, and I asked if her family and friends are alright. She replied, softly, "yes... but all those other people died." I left feeling heavy, full of tears and guilt, imagining myself floating hysterically in a deluge, doing the best to stay alive, while shouting out my mothers name, and wondering about my little cat 'Sonny'. I came home and switched on the TV, hoping to shut off my mind, and all I got was a big breasted blonde newscaster saying: "ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE BIG ONE? STAY TUNED FOR TIPS FOR EARTHQUAKE KITS". I switched the channel to another bimbo soothsayer warning me about:"THE ARAB FIFTH COLUMN LIVING AMONGST US". I lit a cigarette and sighed... I felt at ease... at least it's not an earthquake. --------------------- |
