The problem of man and freedom is both historical and psychological, as in Eric Fromm's book, "Escape from Freedom", in which he fuses Freud and Marx and poses the question: "Can freedom become a burden, too heavy for man to bear, something he tries to escape from?..Is there not also, perhaps, besides an innate desire for freedom, an instinctive wish for submission?" Fromm then quotes the philosopher John Dewey: "The serious threat to our democracy is not the existence of foreign totalitarian states. It is the existence within our own personal attitudes and within our own institutions of conditions which have given a victory to external authority..The battlefield is also accordingly here--within ourselves and our institutions." --------------------- |
