I think there was always a conflict between the states and the Federal government going back to the War of Independence. The states consisted of small farmers who resented the central government, which they saw as a remnant of the old English aristocracy: well mannered, educated thinkers who owned land and steered the future of the nation. This group, the Federalists, were the followers of Hamilton, whereas the small farmers, were Jeffersonians. One can trace this historical conflict to the Civil War, and certainly, to Brown v Board of Education with the desegregation of southern schools, and the South, in general. My cousin's husband is a northerner from Maine, and a military man. He was stationed in Savannah were he worked with "redneck" secessionists who, as he says, still bark and moan about the "Rise of the Southern man". These are the folks who make up a big part of the Libertarian party... and they are the nutty conspiracy theorists to whom I often refer. The type who think Obama is a Marxist-Islamo-Fascist, and say that "guv'ment is evil", yet they drive on public roads, collect disability, obtain food stamps, and call the fire department when their meth lab blows up. --------------------- |
