In 1833, Eli Smith wrote about his research in Armenia. while in the area, he comes into contact with the Syriac speaking Christians. Throughout his book, he never mentions and "Assyrians" but he refers to them as Chaldeans and Nestorians. This would make sense since there was no "Assyrian identity" at that time and the people were not calling themselves Assyrians nor did Eli Smith mention anything Assyrian about them. It was later orientalists and western Christian missionaries who revived the Assyrian name and gave it to the Nestorians just as Chaldean became the religious title for the those who reunited with Rome in 1552. This is why the older generations such as my aunt refers to Chaldeans as all Catholics and "Aturaya" is being used in the same way for the non-Roman Catholics. --------------------- |
