SIMELE SIMELE became the killing fields In the year of 33, When General Bekir Sidqi Brought our nation to its knees. A nation was raped of its innocence A nation was stripped of its pride, A nation was deprived of humanity The start of a new Genocide. The scene was all too familiar The had lived this nightmare before, When in 1914 – the Ottoman troops Attacked at the end of the war. 750,000 civilians Were butchered and slaughtered that year, ‘Slaughter of the Innocents’ they called it It’s impact still vividly clear. With the promise that ‘no one will get hurt’ If they laid down their guns and their knives, Not knowing that once they fulfilled this request The Assyrians would pay with their lives. The Assyrians were seen as a “problem” In the eyes of the Turks and the Kurds, Their existence was seen as a thorn in their side Elimination at ONCE!! must occur. They suddenly attacked without warning Our people were dropping like flies, Women and children, with no where to run Stood defenceless, with no where to hide. I wonder how many were calling Gods name As they faced the end of a sword, After all – it was their religion That earned then this unjust reward. Their crime was the fact they were Christians Their faith became their downfall, They pleaded for mercy, they begged for their lives They prayed for a saviour to call. But their prayers had all gone unanswered Barbaric acts they endured, Defenceless civilians, no weapons to fight Their death was truly assured. Degraded to the highest of standards Women forced to parade in the nude, Fathers stood helpless, as their 10 year old girls Were repeatedly raped and abused. Ignoring the pleas of a new mothers cries With her child still attached to her breast, Her blood curdling screams echoed all round As they tore him away from her chest. Where was the British battalion?? You were supposed to be on our side, Why did you have to betray us? You left us to perish and die. For three days our people were massacred Savagely beaten and raped, Butchered and bludgeoned, beheaded and burnt How lucky were those who escaped. But even for those who had fled the scene The images will always remain, The smell of the corpses, the burning of flesh Forever tattooed inside of their brain. They say if you visit SIMELE You can hear the young babies cry, The ghosts of the innocent victims Still haunt the mountains nearby. These people who caused us this carnage Are the people you sit with today, These people who forced us to drown in our blood Are trying to lead you astray. Don’t tell us they’re trying to help us Don’t tell us forgive and forget, Stop putting our brothers’ lives on the line You’re playing Russian Roulette. What makes you think you are different? Do you think they consider you friend? My brother, these smiling assassins Will one day bring YOU to an end. Why don’t you do us a favour If you want to earn more respect, Just give us our name and our house back We’re sick of your lies and neglect. --------------------- |
