...when Kennedy but mostly Johnson pushed through the Civil Rights Act in 1967 (?), they lost the South for Democrats, from that day to this. The Republicans figured to pick it up by slyly appealing to outraged racists who switched in great numbers till the once Democratic South went almost totally Republican...they figured it was worth swapping the Black vote for the Racist vote...although they were clever enough to use token kneegrows like Uncle Thomas Clarence and others...figured they could have it both ways; fool overeager Blacks that they had "arrived" and could enter the Republican Country Club through the front door....and also courted southern racists...the result has been a majority of Southern Cracker presidents....good old boys, anti-intellectuals, those who hate "elites" and of course, are very religious....it's been basically a Southern racist leadership for these 30 years....and when the president wasn't from the South his backers certainly were. --------------------- |
