You just reminded me of an interesting exchange I heard yesterday in Detroit on a local news show, called "The Craig Fahle Show". He interviewed a reverend in Detroit who was organizing a political march about the city's upcoming bankruptcy (and possible takeover by an "Emergency Financial Manager") - obviously a political rally.

This is a call-in show, so later on after the reverend was off the air, they took calls, and a man called in and said that Detroit would have a lot more tax revenue (and wouldn't be on the verge of bankruptcy) if these types of "political" holy people and their institutions paid their fair share of taxes. I think that - and I'm sure you would agree - religious institutions should definitely and certainly be taxed, and apparently we're not the only ones.
