...where are the jobs? Why doesn't someone create Jobs? Why won't pundits talk about anything but what the real problem is? Modern Western Society, all societies really, are made up of busy little bees working for someone in order to get money to buy food. Hardly anyone grows their own food any more...or makes much of anything for themselves. We have a society in which we all need to get money to buy the basics of life. Since it's really no fun being a worker, and not a whole lot more fun being a boss, the only thing that keeps us all going is greed. Bosses put up with being bosses in order to make more and more money and workers put up with work for the same reason....except for 30 years and more the bosses have been getting more money and the workers less...and one of the chief ways the bosses have made more is by shipping jobs to cheaper workers in other countries and lowering wages and benefits at home until their own workers can hardly afford to buy all the stuff they make, the stuff they HAVE to buy in order to keep their jobs going. Automation and downsizing and multi-tasking has also cut into buying power and when people don't buy, jobs are lost and so on and so forth. Even if jobs were to be created somehow they would still be low-paying jobs so the problem would hardly change....it's instructive too that pundits are only talking about reducing unemployment, not ending it...and this is a major feature of capitalism: that you NEED a large pool of unemployed workers to keep the employed workers in line and to make sure bosses have plenty of desperate workers in that pool to draw from....they're only talking about lessening the misery, not ending it. 5% or 7% unemployment and misery will be viewed as success. At its heart it's a very silly and inefficient system. It only worked as long as consumer/workers made enough money to buy all the junk they produce...but since one of the main ways of making profits was to cut wages to the bone, bosses wound up cutting their noses off to spite their faces....only the overseas markets have delayed the inevitable but there comes a day when that isn't even enough. There are no jobs being created because there are better ways for bosses to make money now...they can gamble at the Wall Street casinos, especially if the government makes good their losses, as it just did. Eventually Capitalism breaks down...it's broken...it broke badly in the 30s....FDR patched it together for a bit, but they've broken it again and there is no FDR and besides it won't work this time because government has to borrow the money for stimulus spending which means greater interest payments which means less taxes for schools and medicare and everything else....plus which low-paying jobs means a low tax base so here we are again. It's the Banks and monetary policy....petroleum could have been cheese and we'd still wind up with the same problem....ahem. --------------------- |
