Not being Christian, Muslim or Jew…Buddhist, Taoist or Voodooist and not believing in the Tooth Fairy either, I can look at each of these belief systems as psychological phenomenon without getting emotionally tangled up in them…and as such I can try to assess their impact on believers and what they’ve cost the rest of us. Obviously most people find it comforting to believe a god is looking out for their welfare, even if it’s done in mysterious ways. They figure it’s better than nothing. Personally, I don’t like gods…of any kind. Good people are good anyway, all religion has done is provide a marvellous cover for the bad people… So just taking them all as belief systems there isn’t much to recommend any one over another. It’s strictly a matter of into whom religion you’re born and then there are the few who actually choose for themselves later on The promise of an eternal afterlife has even crept into Buddhism in some places. I realize people are afraid of the dark and don’t much like the idea of rotting merrily underground…but this business of living for 100,000 years and then another million and ten billion has got to be the worst hell ever imagined. Especially in the company of the kinds of people who flatter themselves with being among the few chosen. For all the similarities and interchangeableness, however, Christianity stands apart. We’ve already seen that this is the only religion that requires its believers to eat human flesh and drink human blood….plus some other strange things which, if a citizen did them, would also be crimes. But there’s the problem with it’s very core, which is that a murder had to be committed before any of it could happen. That’s another most odd and unheard of thing for a religion…especially one of “love”. I mean, SOMEBODY had to murder Christ for the “gift” of Christianity to materialize. There’s no two ways about it. Either the Hebrews had to do it, or the Romans, Hottentots, Apaches etc. No murder equals no Christianity….that simple. Clearly Jesus wasn’t the promised Messiah either. He didn’t save the Israelites, he didn’t inaugurate the New Millenium…he didn’t defeat any armies of evil…in fact, he couldn’t even save himself. On top of that when the Romans converted THEY started murdering Christians…more than they ever had when they were still tolerant pagans. This religion, born in murder, sooner or later makes murderers out of the majority of its followers…either directly or through taxes and votes. And I think it does so way out of proportion to what is normal viciousness for humans. I think Christianity MAKES people more vicious than they would be without it. How can it be otherwise when you consider that, given the power, no Christian today could afford to save “sweet’ Jesus. To do so would rob them of THEIR immortality….because the greatest single benefit Christianity has to offer comes THROUGH murder…no murdered Christ, no salvation…no bleeding corpse, no blood to “wash’ in. …yuck. I wonder if it’s only a coincidence that “imMORTALity looks so much like imMORALity…I always have to glance at the words twice to make sure I have the right one….coincidence? Like god, spelled backwards is dog? I mean, dogs existed at the same time people decided that spelling the name backwards would constitute the word for god…at least English-speaking people. And the dog has been universally disdained in almost all cultures…in fact to call someone a dog meant you had a fight on your hands…and the worst insult to a man is to call his mother a female dog; a bitch. Was someone having fun? I hope so. It’s nice to think of people actually enjoying religion for once. I can’t think of another religion, since the birth of Christianity, that has made murder a starting point for a religion…except maybe the cult of Kali, the Hindu goddess who required random human sacrifice. But nothing in the modern era…nothing in Islam or Judaism, Buddhism etc. Well, in Voodoo they do cut the heads off of roosters to use the blood in rituals…hmmmmmmm. Anyway, given the history of Christianity and its increasing levels of violence, some apology has to be made for our poor human species. This religion has given us a bad name. We can’t be THAT awful! Perhaps the early childhood trauma of being indoctrinated into this cult of death…of the murder of an Innocent and the rewards that can only come through his murder, does untold damage to the developing human mind. Looking at Christians, certainly the overwhelming majority of them, it’s hard to see what good its done them…except in the harm they’ve done to others from which they’ve benefited…like the harm they had to do Jesus before the goods would flow?….would flow?….would flow…..? Like oil, maybe….? --------------------- |
