Thursday: 56 Iraqis Killed, 252 Wounded by Margaret Griffs Jan 20, 2011 For the third day in a row, massive attacks targeting police and pilgrims have shocked Iraqis who hoped the seating of a new government would bring calm to the country. At least 56 were killed and 252 more were wounded in the violence which took place between Baquba and Karbala, including Baghdad, where many pilgrims are traveling by foot for Arbaeen observances. Despite increased security, bombers have successfully attacked Shite pilgrims trying to reach the holy city of Karbala ahead of Arabaeen next week. A Health Ministry official placed the toll at 50 dead and 203 wounded, but at least one more fatality has been reported. Those numbers could change, as conflicting numbers are par for the course in significant attacks such as these. At least three car bombs at two different checkpoints were involved, and suicide vest bombers may have also been present. The attacks occured just outside the secure area of the city and left many security personnel dead or injured. In Baquba, three people were killed and 30 others were wounded when a car bomb balsted a police station. A bomb targeting pilgrims in Kannan killed one and wounded 10 more. In Baghdad, one pilgrim was killed and nine more were wounded during a roadside bombing in Doura. The last Christians in Habbaniya Cece are considering abandoning their home for safer locations. .Wednesday: 22 Iraqis Killed, 141 Wounded - Jan 19, 2011 .Tuesday: 66 Iraqis Killed, 175 Wounded - Jan 18, 2011 .Monday: 9 Iraqis Killed, 22 Wounded - Jan 17, 2011 .Sunday: 1 Iraqi Killed, 14 Wounded - Jan 16, 2011 .Saturday: 3 US Soldiers, 2 Iraqis Killed; 6 Iraqis Wounded - Jan 15, 2011 -- And of course today outgoing Senator Liberman was adamant that Iraq is in better shape today than before the illegal war of aggression for which he voted, insisting that Sadam had "intentions" of making WMDs just as I have "intentions" of taking a piss on the Sentaor's face. --------------------- |
