Word reached me that you have taken my article, The State of Assyria, in the Zinda January 29, issue, SERIOUSLY, and have invited all sorts of Assyrian political entities for discussion, to build consensus, the way I suggested. Bravo! I commend you for these steps. However, a word of caution: Please, DO NOT engage in talks about a "Christian" province. We, the Assyrian people REFUSE to be called “Christians,” for the same reason we are refusing to be called “Kurdish Christians.” We are Assyrians, and that piece of land which you are sitting upon, and conducting business today, is, was, and ALWAYS will be known as ASSYRIA. It is the land of our forefathers, the land that has housed many invaders and occupiers, including the Kurds, with whom we have shared our home, and has even been the foundation of Western culture, not to mention the starting point of humanity! It is brimming with Assyrian artifacts, as PROOF of our existence. Do not think the Kurds can do away with our name, our identity, AND STILL LIVE to talk about it. We have been extremely patient with the Kurds up until now. But let them NOT mistaken our kindness for fear! We will have NOTHING to fear if the Kurds do not follow through on their commitments to us, because we will have nothing left to lose, if we lose our ancestral lands! It is true that we fought side by side with the Kurds for years, and struggled together, but WHERE are OUR rewards and benefits? To be used for years and tossed aside like rubbish is NOT very smart for the Kurds to do, because they will create a whole new generation of Assyrians who have nothing to lose in trying to wipe Kurdistan off the face of the map! It is better for the Kurds to keep their word and show their true brotherhood, NOW, so that we can live in the land of Ashur together in harmony. We are not greedy, nor selfish. We want what the Kurds want, nothing more, nothing less. So remind them of that. You say that you respect my thoughts and opinions, and I say that I respect you and all your hard work for our people. If we have this mutual respect going, then we need to confer together, and you need to think of me as 1 person who represents hundreds of thousands of Assyrians, who feel the same way as I do, and want to maintain their identity, their ancestral lands, and most of ALL, their integrity. I can help you any way you need, to achieve the Assyrian rights in our own homeland, legally, ethically, and rightfully. But, we will never allow a bunch of rogue clergy, operating under their church directives to deter the Assyrian struggle for identity and national rights and to undermine our aspirations, nor will we put up with the Kurdish shenanigans! If the Kurds do not make good on their word today, they will have to contend with us tomorrow, TO BE SURE! So, Mr. Aghajan, DO THE RIGHT THING, and do it right, from the start, and everyone will be happy. --------------------- |
