...without weighing its costs is like crediting your rapist because he also bougth you a candy bar after he was done with you...or gave you a college scholarship, or a commission to paint the Sistine Chapel.

The question shouldn't be, "what compensation did you get and was it well worth it"...that, after all, is what you ask a whore....it is, "was whatever benefit you received worth the price you had to pay, the price you were FORCED to pay"...because for almost all of religion's dreary ascendancy, people, children especially, had absolutely no choice in the matter...they were forcibly raped from childhood, and not always metaphorically speaking, and left to struggle to justify the "benefits" they received from their rapist...and there WERE benefits, but so what?

Rape is rape...or should be. We should not be seeking absolution for it in the benefits conferred on the victims by their rapists.
