A dear friend of mine, Mr. Shimshon Essa, passed away Tuesday, 12/12/06. He was a great man and a great Assyrian. His family was like a second family to me. I grew up with his daughter and his son, Raman, in Illinois, and his other two daughters. What I loved about this man was the way in which he made every single human being he ever met, IMPORTANT. He was loving, kind, generous, humorous, interesting, and extremely sophisticated for Assyrians. He could get so much across with just a couple of words. Even if you were down in the dumps, his winning and warm smile lit up the world and made you forget your troubles. He was one of the last gentlemen. WHAT A LOSS TO HIS FAMILY, TO ME, AND ASSYRIA!!! He was a brother to one of Assyria's most talented and powerful writers, Mr. Mishael Lazar Essa. I don't have to tell you that Mishael Lazar Essa was not just an author of numerous books, but a poet and an epic play-wright in Baghdad. My dad was a good friend of Mishael's and the two were in the Iraqi army together and later my dad starred in some of his plays. MishaEl Lazar Essa was one of the first Assyrians to translate Shakespeare. He cast my dad in one of his translated Shakespearean plays, Othelo. Mr. Shimshon Essa was just as talented as his brother Mishael Lazar Essa. But he was too busy working as an immigrant father in America, and raising a family of four. He loved to sing and occasionally sang some of his brother's songs. Mr. Shimshon and his wife loved me like their own daughter. When we saw each other, we would immerse ourselves into each other's arms. Mr. Shimshon's late mother, nani, made the best dolma in the world! She taught me how to make it and how to roll the grape leaves on the takhta, so that each one was tiny, slender, and in equal proportion to the rest. I became one of the greatest dolma makers in the world, using her method for creating the most desirable appearance, and my grandmother's ingredients, which would bring the dead back to life! I used to roll the dolma with Nani and sing my dolma song. From there on, every time mam-Shisho saw me, he would ask me to sing my dolma song. I never turned him down, no matter how I was feeling. I will sing the song for you below, mam-shisho. Rest in peace, you were a great soul!!!
