NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Reuters) – An 8,000-pound elephant at a Tennessee zoo backed a trainer into a wall and crushed her to death, and the zoo said on Saturday it had temporarily closed its elephant exhibit. Stephanie James, 33, was fatally injured Friday while performing routine chores involving Edie, a 26-year-old, 8,000-8,500-pound elephant who is 8 and a half feet tall at the shoulder. "At this point in time we don't believe it to be a malicious act or an aggressive act on Edie's part, but the review is ongoing to determine what happened in the barn," Rolen said. Rolen said Edie, one of three zoo elephants, will not be punished or disciplined in any way. "Our training program is based on positive reinforcement," she said. The zoo was open on Saturday but the elephant display was closed. ...what could be a more "positive reinforcement", for the elephant, than to crush one of its tormentors? Always sad that people get killed, but there´s such a thing as asking for it...that Australian guy who annoyed wild animals for a living and got a Sting Ray barb through his heart also got what he richly deserved...who said that animals must endure being ill treated by humans, for profit? I´m always thrilled when Nature wins one...my favorite is when a matador, that exemplar of cowardice, gets gored and tossed and stomped and dragged around...if ever there is justice in this world it exists whenever a true animal wins. --------------------- |
