I had a wonderful Iranian new year's celebration recently with a Persian friend. During conversation, he mentioned that in Iran, if you want to change your gender, you can, and the government will pay for it. Apparently a woman who wanted to be a man, years ago, convinced one of the high religious figures that while her body was a woman, her soul was a man, and she desired to become a man, and marry a woman, etc. The religious figure was sufficiently compelled by her argument and he lobbied the government to not only allow for gender change, but to pay for it. Of course, having said that, he explained, homosexuality is still frowned upon. But he did say that many homosexuals were able to avoid punishment by having (fraudulent) identification cards made, so if they were caught, they could at least say they were in transition and they are generally let free on these grounds. I found this to be very interesting, given what we are told about Iran by the white (non-Jewish) men in business suits who control most of the media in the US of A. --------------------- |
