usurp Main Entry: Pronunciation: \yu̇-ˈsərp also -ˈzərp\ Function: verb Etymology: Middle English, from Anglo-French usorper, from Latin usurpare to take possession of without legal claim, from usually (abl. of usus use) + rapere to seize — more at rapid Date: 14th century transitive verb1 a: to seize and hold (as office, place, or powers) in possession by force or without right <usurp a throne> b: to take or make use of without right <usurped the rights to her life story> ....you have to remember that we're dealing in international law. The word usurp usually refers to an internal matter...a general taking power from a king, that sort of thing. It doesn't apply when one country attacks another and steal its lands....that's because in international law might makes right. ...If the Kurds had removed Saddamm through a coup and taken over, you could say they usurped power. Instead they rebelled and when Iraq wasn't able to put them down, they formed their own government.....they haven't seized a government, they created one. They're now a country...for all practical purposes. They haven't usurped anyone. The Assyrians certainly were in no position to do anyything....just because the Kurds had their act together and we didn't is no reason to blame them. --------------------- |
