Had to do it finally. Had to get the “Warren Commission Report” to check for myself. The Commission report is only 700 pages or so long...a little more than half of Bugliosi’s book. But before wading through them all, I have to say Bugliosi’s overall objection to anyone claiming the government got it wrong, either deliberately or because of incompetence “must” be a fool or egg-head or nut is a little hard to swallow. He tells us the Commission members are beyond reproach, are well-respected and serious, are all revered and sober etc. Would THESE kinds of men lie...or cover-up? Does that mean that anyone who contradicts them is by definition UN-sober etc? Well, yes, that is exactly his meaning. Could anyone really believe the CIA would murder its own president? Well....yes. Garrison doesn’t claim the entire CIA conspired to kill Kennedy...he says “rogue elements” within it used their Cuban, anti-Castro contract players, all of whom were now out of a job thanks to Kennedy being “soft” on Communism, to do the actual shooting. No doubt Bugliosi, and his kind, who invest government officials with halos and condemn anyone who dares say otherwise, would have cried foul at the accusations surrounding Nixon when his turn came. How could ANYONE suspect, he would say, a president of the United States!!! How could anyone accuse his aides of seamy plots, hush money and pay-offs...how could any but a nut dare to think plots were conducted to smear rivals...offices broken into and stolen letterhead stationery forged to slander political rivals...and no doubt Bugliosi would have felt morally justified UNTIL the actual evidence leaked out that Nixon had indeed ordered all of these things and lied and lied and lied. We all know Bush lied....but is anyone terribly upset? Even though thousands of Americans and a million or more Iraqis died as a result...any outrage? Apparently we’ve grown comfortable with lying presidents...we aren’t shocked any more. Since the Warren Commission has ordered sealed for 75 years the only documents that could settle this thing once and for all, Bugliosi can say what he couldn’t say AFTER we had proof in our hands of Nixon’s crimes. Once the truth about Nixon came out, even he would have had to admit it...but had it never come out, our “suspicions” about the president would have, could have, been written off to a bunch of “nuts” and “kooks”. That’s why it’s so necessary to get ALL the facts and evidence. Nixon’s case clearly shows how withholding evidence, or lack of actual proof, can lead people astray...allow them to continue thinking a sitting president is honorable BECAUSE he is president, rather than learn that he is after all a crook-president. Why are those documents and X-rays and notes sealed for the lifetimes of all those alive during the assassination? Is it in order to KEEP the saintly reputations of the commission members alive....until then? Seeing as how we take Bush’s lies in stride...and how we accepted Johnson’s lies about the Gulf of Tonkin incident, another lie that led us into a disastrous but highly profitable war, with no one demanding that his grave be desecrated...no doubt the Commission knew that after 75 years, with our poor memories and ineffectual moral fiber, no one would care or be shocked to learn that indeed a handful of CIA operatives, using their trained Cuban exiles, carried out the murder of Kennedy. Who will care....then? Two weeks ago we learned that vice president Cheney had a secret unit working out of his office, the office of the vice president, to plan assassinations. So, it isn’t so far-fetched after all. The CIAs main business is to lie....even under oath. It would get nowhere if it EVER told the truth, unless there was no harm in it. We know, now, that they planned to assassinate Castro...and others...and have killed many, including Allende, Lamumba and others no doubt. In fact, Johnny Roselli, who testified to a government commission that he had been hired by the CIA to kill Castro (which it had to finally admit) wound up soon after cut into pieces and floating in an oil drum off the Florida coast. Instantly the word was that the Mob killed him. Why? Why would the Mob be upset if the public learned the CIA was in the same business of Murder Inc. that they were? Of the two Mobs which would be likely to be more upset at this bit of information going public...the Italian Mob or the CIA mob? The assassination of Kennedy wasn’t conducted like the usual Mob hit...which is too get close and empty a gun into someone’s head. At any number of public appearances, or when Kennedy shook hands with a crowd, someone could have pulled a gun and blown him away....even in public...as Sirhan Sirhan did to Robert Kennedy. The melodrama and planning surrounding the Dealy Plaza attack on Kennedy has all the elements of a CIA or assassination expert’s plot. Even though the police agencies were quite different and more thorough than those usually encountered in the kinds of countries they usually plied their trade in. But, in America also there was a great incentive to reassure the public, to quickly find the best case scenario possible...in this the plotters knew they would have the considerable power of the government behind their plans, covering up whatever loose ends they left behind. It was, after all, in the National Interest in a BIG way. Anyone shooting Kenney up close would have been arrested...and that would be no good, for the CIA plotters. Instead a long-distance hit was planned, allowing the real culprits to get away. Oswald had been prepped earlier and handed over as the “patsy” he said he was within minutes. And when there was doubt of his guilt or his alone, the hand of Mafia was inserted into the public’s mind. You can go nuts trying to untangle this web...you can feel like a “conspiracy nut”....but you have to keep reminding yourself that the actual and final evidence that would silence everyone has been locked away for 75 years by the people entrusted with FINDING all the evidence and supposedly making it known to the public. If there are questions and conspiracy theories, Bugliosi and the Commission have to look no further for reasons than the very behavior of those who had the responsibility. What are the rest of us humans supposed to do if the government refuses to give us all the evidence with which to make an intelligent judgment...take their word for it? Yes...that’s exactly what they expect us to do...and those of us who won’t automatically believe whatever the government tells us to are said to be nuts and theorists and, in the Bush years, “enemies” of America, no less. How handy. I don’t know what the truth is. But I do know that the government that could give me the evidence to convince me refuses to do so. Given the option of blindly following, or guessing for myself, I’ll trust myself....especially when it’s that same government that is withholding all the most pertinent information. Such a government I would definitely NOT trust. But that’s their call, not my fault. To do less is un-American. It’s them “European Socialists” that demand conformity...you know, like socialism always does....but I grew up in democratic and free-market AMERICA...where we think for ourselves...or used to. Either give me all the evidence or give me death! --------------------- |
