...politics is the art of getting and keeping power....power brings money and a lot of other things but without political power you're nowhere.

Since the beginnings of organized societies, politics has meant gaining and keeping power. Whether in a tribe of cannibals, a monarchy, despotism or democracy...the name of the game is power. The rich and powerful want to stay that way and get more....and some want to join their ranks...the rest of us have always just wanted to survive a little, marry, raise families, see our children settled and die in peace....we don't crave power and leave it to those who do to rule us....sometimes the rulers go too far and we bestir ourselves and hang them or cut their heads off, but then soon enough we go back to our private concerns and let some new group of power-hungry people rule for and over us.

In every other form of government power is exersized openly and with no apologies...the people are used to it and the rulers are comfortable with it...there's no need to pretend things are other than they are..."we rule you", is the "system".

Only a democracy needs tricks because theorhetically, at least, the rest of us can determine who rules us and by what rules which can limit the power of the powerful and hence their riches and other privileges....and hence Fascism is born, a close cousin of advertising and marketing....we have to be fooled into voting against our interests...otherwise we would have the actual power....of course we do, but we don't really, because we're still mainly concerned with the day to day tasks of living and raising families....and that's that.
