...that is, do you NOT believe in Voodoo? Or are you an Athorist...one who does not believe in Thor? How about an Avenusist...one who does not believe in Venus? You get my drift: that it's incorrect to stick people with the silly name of the thing they DON'T believe in and never did...I reject the term Atheist because I have NEVER believed for a second in any god...the concept of god never entered my head in the first place for me to later become an A-godist. Just call me rational...call me logical...call me reasonable, call me pretty, if you must. And yes, it IS unreasonable to believe in gods...defies all reason and logic, past human development of around 10,000 years ago...and we are well past that hoary time.

This is the religious "thinker"....

"Excuse me Mr. Rational Man but do you believe the sun revolves around the earth...what's that?...you say you don't know, well BOOM! Yes, god made it that way!....and tell me Mr. Logical Man, do you believe god created the heavens in ten minutes...you don't know?...BOOM that proves God did it!!! And one more thing, Mr. Evidence Man, do you actually not believe God makes the tides go in and out...BO...what's that? Oh...you've proven it's the moon's gravitational pull...okay, you can have that one"

That's all we have with these god-people...whatever they said, and killed you for not accepting, that god created and ruled, that we hadn't YET found a scientific explanation for, they insisted was proof that God must have done it...and in the long march of history whatever has been shown to have a rational explanation AND they could no longer kill you for believing, they grudgingly allowed us to teach and believe. Thanks a lot.

It is understandable that primitive humans invented gods for themselves...and their "proofs" are SO obviously cobbled together by those same nitwits or, worse, taken at face value, with no evidence at all, by people much later..people who should have, who COULD have, known better, that the sooner we dump God the sooner we'll all be a lot better off.

There has yet to be a society built on a rational basis, with reason and logic held in great esteem, rather than bugaboo fear, for us to even begin testing those waters...all we've had are a few societies, all of them first wracked and torn and driven mad BY religions, who were never able to first heal the wounds religion gave them, and know they were free of religion's psychic damage, before they tried to live without it.

Russia is a good example, as Hitchens points out...for centuries illiterate Russian serfs were told the Tzar, the "Little Father" (guess who the Big One was) was next to god...was god-like...and head of the church and state...the conditions were ripe, not for a free open society but a god-bedeviled society, suddenly let loose from their thralldom, who immediately became enthralled with the next Big Daddy...Stalin would have been a fool not to take the place in the peasant's eyes as the next near-god ruler...Russia after 1917 was hardly an "atheistic" society...it was a god-diseased society, and they didn;t get rid of that disease the next year...they just got a new god: the State.
