Mitchell’s flair for language is wonderful, but I’m not so sure about the writer himself. Aside from implying that Islam is the “monster” of the Epic and the United Christians States the hero, albeit misguided…he goes on to say that the epic heroes were famously concerned with making famous names for themselves…very like the more recent Cassius Clay. That’s odd. As I’m sure he knows and anyone else on earth does too, Cassius Clay was the Christian slave name of Muhhamad Ali…the best boxer ever and one of the best athletes and gentlemen too, who just happened to convert to Islam, with no force. Why, all these years later, refer to him by his other name? Surely the author wishes his book to be read in a hundred years…will anyone then remember Muhammad Ali’s old Christian name? If the shoe was on the other foot and a Muhhamad Ali converted to Christianity, taking on the name of Peter…would any Christian writer refer to him by his old Muslim name again? Wouldn’t they be thrilled to present him from then on as a Christian, name and all? Is Mitchell “not thrilled” that Cassius became Muhammad? Is this his way, by refusing him his name and identity and religion, of letting us know just how much he despises Islam…the “monster” of his version of the Epic? I also find his continuingly adding topical references to the war in Iraq, irritating. This too will become less and less well known, except as a war crime to surpass even those other Nazis. Other than that…good poetry. I guess good material can make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear. --------------------- |
