After thirty years intimate involvement with this community the one, over riding, sense I come away with is that assyrians hate themselves and it's not hard to see why. In the first place they dare claim descent from the ancient Assyrians...and yet the first thing one thinks of when confronted by the incredible mediocrity of those who make this claim the loudest is, "what happened to YOU"? Meaning, what good is this noble ancestry you claim when there are no signs of it at all in you? And they're sensitive to that as well...they know better than anyone else what a poor figure they cut in the world...and it doesn't help their fading self-esteem when, to explain why they are among the lowest of the low, they whine that Arabs did this and that to them...that it is because they were treated as "second-class" citizens that they never read a book or took a bath... ...it's not like they can point to a great battle where their hosts were defeated by Arab armies greatly outnumbering them...no, their demise came about because they preferred huddling in remote villages where they could brag to each other, much as they still do, rather than get out in the world and actually achieve something...that and betraying their own country neighbors. For whatever reason Chaldeans were never so limited, perhaps because they never demanded a part of Iraq but saw themselves as loyal Iraqis who therefore didn't get up on their hindlegs and scream whenever a Muslim went by...instead Chaldeans went out in the world and competed and bested the competition, and then came to America and did the same...while the assyrians continued to huddle in villages of the mind and brag about what POWER they have. For these and many other such reasons, assyrians hate themselves...for their weakness of character, their lack of education and culture and their constant resort to whining and finger-pointing....they KNOW, when they call for 1000 heroes that no one is going to show up..they know it and they hate themselves for being so weak and foolish, such pathetic losers...and yet what can they do? Given the overinflated image they have of themselves as the children of Ashurbanipal who none the less have to beg and expose their wounds in the marketplace to get pity....it's a cycle of self-loathing that feeds on itself...they issue more and more "comuniques"...send more and more "proclamations", issue calls for armies and weapons all the time knowing full well that nothing but more shame and embarrassment is going to come of it...and so their self-loathing increases and increases....the poor, deserving, bastards. --------------------- |
