Why didn't the Turks do all these things before this time period? Why not in 1415 or 1715? There is more to it, and with all due respect, the numbers claimed by seyfo, are not reliable or trustworthy because it has been proven before by historians that Christian priest were giving lists of victims which exceeded the total populations of the town. This means the priest, who are so "holy" had no problem with lying when it comes against Muslims just as they do today. Another thing thiat needs to be mentioned here is that the Turks in the past were not oppressive toward their citizens. There are plenty of writers, professionals, free of prejudice and well respected who wrote about the tolerance in the Ottoman empire. While A catholic could not reside with a Protestant elsewhere, Christians were not oppressed in the Ottoman lands. There is so much more than what we are told and those who claim it was a genocide fall under the following categories: Prejudice ignorant Have never researched it correctly Is it not ironic that to this day it is politicians and other amateurs who are deciding it was a genocide? Where are the historians? I have had this debate many times in the past with Assyrian nationalists and they either tell me they don't care for what historians have to say because their "relatives" told them "everything" or they tell me "the whole world knows it and only a fool denies it". Well I say that I careless what a "relative" told me because I care for truth. That "relative" may have seen or heard some Christians were killed but that is not being denied by the Turks nor by me. Nor do I care what the "whole world thinks" because the "whole world" also watched over a million Iraqis starve to death and that same "whole world" are not all historians. What historians say is one thing and what the amateurs think is another. So far the Turks are winning this debate and Christians are looking to good especially if one considers that the telegrams were fabricated by Christians and so were statements put in the mouths of Ottoman officials. It's not looking good so far. What I do know is that wars were fought, it was the rise of nationalism, people were massacred on all sides and there were deaths on all sides. What I also know so far from doing almost 10 years of research is that the evidence for a genocide is lacking. It is natural for conquerors to defeat or try to put down rebels even though people don't like to be occupied by others, The Turks were not oppressive toward the Christians in their empire but those very same Christians became influenced by nationalism, and although the Turks were tolerant to the minorities, the Christians still didn't want to live under Muslims because they don't like to. We seen it in Iraq how our "Assyrians" not all, but many of them can't behave or be good citizens because it is a Muslim majority country yet will behave in Sweden, Canada etc. The Russians, British etc used the Armenians and other Christians in the Ottoman empire in order to defeat the Turks and that was the real cause of the wars. Of course some soldiers may have been brutal and took pleasure in killing but the government had no intention to wipe them out or kill all Christians. The Turks had many centuries and all the power in the world to wipe out the Christians but they didn't do it. There is all the evidence in the world, except on silly Assyrian web sites and Fred Aprim's "book" that churches throughout Turkey remained open and Christians in general were not harmed nor was there a nationwide hunt for Christians. Germany was close with the Turks at that time and the German leadership had admitted that it was only helping the Turks defend themselves against the Armenians. Even the Germans knew that the Ottomans were being attacked by many and needed help. However, during the holocaust, the same Turks who are accused of genocide rescued thousands of Jews from the Nazis. Again, there is proof that before and after the alleged genocide, the Turks were actually tolerant and kind. --------------------- |
