I am at work and having a chat with a friend of mine. The guy is patriotic to an extend and a victim to 42 years of US propaganda. He is the only one I can have serious discussions with as he is somewhat more intellectual and understands there is something wrong. But when it comes to comparing other countries to America, his patriotic side kicks in. We had a conversation about this current mess and he asked me if I had to choose which country I would want to be poor in, which would it be. He was shocked that I chose western European countries over America and told me that while Indonesia, el Salvador, etc, have it horrible and a poor there has no running water, electricity, etc, I said there millions of home less here and one can land on the streets or without electricity even while having a job. So the subject of capitalism and free market came up. He said the free-market leads to innovation whereas socialism prevents that since everything is state owned. I disagree with this claim of "innovation" and I even believe that capitalism often prevents success and innovation. A good example is diseases and cures as opposed to selling pills which only treat the problem. It is capitalism which often stops these things because everything is about profit and nothing else. Soviet Union, though had its problems, innovated things. After all, Russians were first in space and were medically and scientifically ahead of the US. The only innovation capitalism produces are ways to cut spending and get machines to do the jobs so they can reduce salaries by firing employees. They also say capitalism leads to jobs, but I say those aren't jobs at all. It is the corporation that needs people to do the labor and produce the wealth. People are prevented from seeking education and careers because they are forced to work at low-wage jobs which take most of the day. In short, capitalism leads to long hours, prevent innovation which benefits mankind, animals and environment, and it leads to global poverty. Countries with social programs are much better off as one can see Sweden, Norway, etc, and one can also look at Cuba and compare to all the surrounding islands and nations which have free markets, no government regulations yet none of them can even spell Cuba. And who knows what else it could achieve where it not for blockades and embargo for all these years.
