Kurdistan From: Britannica Concise Encyclopedia | Date: 2007 Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Mountainous region of Turkey, Iran, Iraq, and Syria, inhabited predominantly by Kurds. It covers about 74,000 sq mi (191,660 sq km), and its chief towns are Diyarbakir, Bitlis, and Van in Turkey, Mosul and Karkuk in Iraq, and Kermanshah in Iran. Since early times the region has been the home of the Kurds, a people whose ethnic origins are uncertain. The Treaty of Sèvres, signed in 1920, provided for the recognition of a Kurdish state, but the agreement was never ratified. ...it would seem that Kurdistan covers a lot of territory...and is recognized as being Kurdistan since "early times"...doesn't say how early but since the origins of the people are "uncertain" I'd guess they've been around for a long time...seems that neither Assyria nor Kurdistan were made into states by the treay of Sevres or any other arrangement...that left the field open to personal initiative and group effort...the same opportunity for Kurds and Assyrians, Turcomans and anyone else...one can see why Kurds today would have no patience for the idea that they owe "national rights" for a "nation of Assyria" when they're the ones who've fought and worked to get a Kurdistan....that they're willing to take in Assyrians, so-called, is pretty grand of them...much as Iraq took in our refugees years ago..let's hope we don't screw the pooch this time too. --------------------- |
