...with a friend of ours...one who's heavily involved in raising money to help Iraqi Christians. He was taking exception to my championing of Dr Joseph's groundbreaking book on the modern Assyrians and how they came to think of themselves as such...he said something like, "what difference does it make...here is a group of people, a minority, surrounded on all sides, that seeks some security for itself and asks for their own territory...so what if they call themselves Assyrians...is it really THAT important"?

I'm paraphrasing, but that covers it pretty well..in other words, why attack their NAME for themselves when it may be the best way for them to gain sone security.

The answer wasn't hard to find...because by making this claim to nation-status based upon membership in a Christian sect, they were taking away whatever "national" foundation they thought to be building. No one wants a Christian enclave, like the Jewish one, plunked down forcibly among Muslims even madder than hell at what Christian nations are doing to them today, on top of all that they've DONE to them.

Also, no one "gives" land back to anyone...no "indigenous people" can use their so-called status as the "first" people on the land as the basis of a claim to take the land away from those living on it. If it were allowed to happen even once, the floodgates would be openned.

Therefore, to show that their claim to being lineal descendants of the ancient Assyrians is 1. bogus to begin with and 2. Meaningless in any case, even if it WAS true, is to remove the two main props of their "nationalist" agenda. Then it remains only to show that they really only ARE religious sects...that they are telling gross lies about the "cruelty" of Islam and all it has supposedly done to cause their dwindling numbers and woeful status by highlighting that Christians have lived at peace in Iraq since the Arabs came...and that it was even BECAUSE of the coming of the Arabs that all these noisome sects were able to thrive and spread...takes away more and more of their various "fronts"...all of which have not contributed one iota to the welfare of the Christians of Iraq...but have only served as the pretext for game-playing...for enhancing the status of taxi drivers and truck drivers and people who desperately need to make themselves over, even at the expense of the innocent Iraqi Christians.

In other words it is precisely because of this bogus claim, and all the stupendously stupid arguments put forth in its favor that modern Assyrians have suffered so...and not because Islam "hates" Christians or, god help us, Assyrians.

Anyone caring about the PEOPLE..the Christian Iraqi children and families, as well as BetNahrain would NOT make these claims to Assyrian ancestry etc etc. Those who work these claims the hardest have their OWN interests in mind, are thinking of their OWN welfare and status, in a world that asks, as a minimum, far more than they can ever achieve...and so they hope to gain some bit of attention for thir STATUS..for their "association" with ancient and glorious people, without lifting much of a finger themselves.

The claim to being a modern Assyrian, when joined with demands for "our land" back, is nothing short of a crime committed against helpless and innocent Iraqi Christians who've made a CHOICE to remain in Iraq all those years they were supposedly suffering at the hands of Islam...by those claiming the loudest to "LOVE KHAYA ATOUR" who've all run OUT of the country, in favor of life in Disneyland...THEY are the real "enemies" of Assyria...if anyone is.
