...this time itīs a debate with a Ritter fellow over Iraq....I begin to understand Hitchenīs point of view...hiscontention is that Saddam was bad, and therefore we shoulnīt wait till he gets worse but take him out now...of course his assumption, if itīs real, that democracy can be imposed on Iraq at the point of a gun is absurd and proven so....but even without that itīs a tough sell. Surely there are people who think the United States has an awful system of government, at least in its foreign relations...but would that justify them in attacking us...would Hitchens "understand" that then? Our likes and dislikes shouldnīt be the measure of all things...and of course the one big missing ingredient in all this is what the UShas DONE that has made it rightly unpopular with other people, Muslims especially, but Jews and Latins and Asians etc and etc. If the attack on 9/11 can be used as jsutification for whatever retaliation we wish to take out on anyone we choose...then why do we discount the entire Israeli/Palestinian conflict as an equally provocative cause for Muslims? A coalition of Christian nations attacked Iraq for 9/11, even though no Iraqis were involved...canīt a coalition of Muslim nations feel equally angered by what the United States has enocuraged and ordered Israel to do? Above all else, beyond the details of who did what when...this meddling through Isarel in the lives of Muslims is at least as much of a provocation as 9/11....except we are the only ones who have a right to be indignant...to feel wounded...and to seek revenge. No one else is allowed those feelings and THATīs where Hitchens shows his hand....HE can be pissed...no one else has the right to be. --------------------- |
