...the whole notion of guaranteeing freedom of conscience to religious folk came about because people of one faith were forcing their views on people of another faith, or no faith. Catholics would deny freedom of conscience to Protestants, where they could, and Protestants would deny the same to Catholics....and they would both deny that freedom to Jews, Muslims, Hottentots and anyone else whose religious views were different from their own, even to the point of killing them for those differences. The struggle for religious freedom was precisely so that people of one religion could not persecute those of another...the battle was not fought so that one religion could dominate another, that was the whole purpose of it, not to dominate and force, but let alone. But our bullies, like Kim Davis, aren't fighting a battle to protect their freedoms, they are fighting to deny others of their freedoms, and in this case, their legal guarantees...it was precisely this sort of intolerance and forcing others to your religious will that the wars of religious freedom were fought against, not for! Davis is on the side of the Inquisition, not of religious liberty...or freedom of conscience. No one is asking her to violate her religion, they are asking her to do her job...if that job now violates her religious convictions, she should ask herself why she wants to continue in it...instead of asking the rest of us to change OUR convictions to suit hers. --------------------- |
