..whenever I read or hear about someone this humane, this intelligent, this understanding, this civilized, I'm thrilled, pleased, relieved, hopeful and glad.

...whenever a religious person makes the aquaintance of such a person his or her reaction is quite different.

..I don't see any evidence that religion makes people better. I see people who've managed to hold onto their decency in spite of religion...but none who are devotedly religiious who are decent and good because of their religion.
