There is no such thing as a pure race, not today and not in the ancient world. Ancient Assyrians, like Babylonians, Sumerians, Akkadians and everyone else were a mixture of people. Mesopotamia was like a New York city of it's day various people mixed. These christians who call themselves "assyrians" today only recently began doing it. What happened that they knew nothing of the ancients except the little mention in the bible and not once did it occur to them that they were related to those people. Did they lose interest of their history or just suddenly forget who they were? The persians didn't lose interests nor forget and neither did others. The most logical explanation is that the ancients(all of them) are the ancestors of modern iraqis and middle east people. To say only these christians, who recently "remembered" are true assyrians, and not anyone else, is silly and has no basis. Just because they speak aramaic and are christians does not make them real assyrians. The iraqi government doesn't buy it and nobody does and shouldn't. They can call themselves whatever they like, and people will laugh along, but nobody will give them any lands nor meet their "demands" just because of what they claim.
