...Hannibal Alkhas, that "great" assyrian artist died recently. He wasnīt assyrian and he certainly wasnīt great...I know because the same people who flattered themselves by calling him great tried the same with me...only I stopped them immediately....I said I wasnīt a "great" assyrian sculptor...I was the ONLY one...by which I meant the only professional one...you know, like a professional historian is one who actually makes his living through his filed of expertise, vs those taxi driving engineers of ours who would die of starvation tomorrow if they actually had to support themselves with their "books". But Hannibal was also a professional. He was passable...he was sometimes good....but most often ho-hum. Apparently assyrians are pissing themselves because they get to create another monument to their Great Lie...this time in Armenia itself...which is like placing a monument in the Vatican honoring the pope...big deal. Itīs another incredibly ugly thing...all concrete and angles...it isnīt sculpture at all...more like a paper cut-out. I respect the fact that anyone from this peasant community dedicates his or her life to the arts...but that doesnīt blind me as to their output. Iīm on the side of Art...not personalities and certainly not assyrians just because they are assyrians. He called himself an artist...to me thatīs sacriligeous...itīs like introducing yourself to people as a genius. People, other than you and your pals, and people yeras later will decide if you were an artist or not. I say Iīm a sculptor, because thatīs what I work at...hannibal was a painter, thatīs all. And his paintings were a lot better than his sculptures. But still...honor to him for having made that big gamble, for risking his future on the arts...and especially for caring to do anything for this whacky and ditzy nayshun...thank goodness for the Persian Muslims though...they honored, respected and supported his work financially...not a single Muslim would ever have expected Hannibal to sweep the floors of their Civic Club in Turlock, where he gave free art lessons to children....again it took Muslims to show respect and appreciation...assyrians wanted a janitor. --------------------- |
