These are not gays attacking them nor anybody else but Christians. Here is a recent issue over the mosque in Manhattan. By Heather Yakin Times Herald-Record Published: 2:00 AM - 08/13/10 MIDDLETOWN — As anti-Islam sentiment has exploded across the country, some local Muslims say the way to defuse distrust is to reach out across religious lines and to become a part of the community. "The general public has an inaccurate idea of what Islam is," said Samuel Encarnacion, president, or emir, of the Masjid Ahlis Sunnah Islamic Information Center in Liberty. "We do not appease, support or agree with any of these terrorist attacks." NYC mosque debate In New York City, barbs and accusations have been flung over the proposed site of an Islamic center a couple of blocks from the World Trade Center's Ground Zero. Similar vitriol has sprung up where mosques have been proposed in California, Tennessee, Long Island and elsewhere. An extremist Christian church in Gainesville, Fla. is planning a "burn the Quran day" for Sept. 11. Things have gotten ugly. "The skyrocketing of opposition against mosques nationwide shows the impact of anti-Muslim sentiment based on unfounded fear and hatred," said Aliya Latif, civil rights director at the Coalition on American-Islamic Relations-New York. Locally, there have been a few small incidents. "My daughter was singled out and bullied for being Muslim," Encarnacion said. It happened at Tri-Valley schools in Grahamsville. The school punished the kids involved. Blames bigots for uproar More recently, a Christian group proselytizing in the neighborhood ripped a sign off the family's door that asked people to remove their shoes because it's a Muslim household. They left "follow the cross" literature in its place. Latif said much of the national uproar is driven by bigots using a smokescreen of feigned concern — such as claims that the proposed Islamic center near the World Trade Center is a "victory mosque" — to push their anti-Muslim agenda. Local Muslims have made a point of reaching out to the community at large to build relationships with non-Muslims. Interfaith community Dr. Quazi al-Tariq, a charter member of the Middletown Islamic Center, said that their congregation works closely with the local interfaith community. They welcome visitors to the mosque, regardless of religion. While their mosque was under construction, they held services at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Middletown. "All religion's main goal is for humanity," al-Tariq said. "To God, all the children, all the faiths are the same." He said Muslims must reach out to their neighbors, to explain their faith and to condemn extremists — those who adopt the external trappings of Islam but who don't practice its tenets — here and abroad. "You have to be part of your community," al-Tariq said. "That's why we have to do good works and good things." It's a message CAIR-NY encourages. "Houses of worship are signs of a well-integrated community," Latif said. "Open houses would allow for neighbors to strengthen bonds and dispel misconceptions about their respective faiths." The Liberty mosque is trying to educate people with fliers and open forums. "We don't hate America. We don't hate white people. We don't hate Christians. We don't hate Jews. We don't hate anyone," Encarnacion said. "I'm 100 percent baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and Chevrolet. I love my country." If Christians had it their way, America's constitution would be gone and it's not like they care for it any ways. America has become the center of Christianity because they follow the military wherever to gain "converts". Then our silly boys tell us how there are Muslims who convert in the Middle East and and Africa. All the Christian missionaries in Iraq are funded by the U.S. government. The above bigots are a perfect example of true Christians. They attack gays, Muslims, Atheists and whoever they can. --------------------- |
