A good friend had asked me to not to refer to Firas Jatou by name. He is, said my friend, a sincere and decent guy trying to do right by the Christians of Iraq...okay, but that was then. o me these nationalists are the greatest "enemies" of the few remaining Christians of Iraq and always have been. As long as Firas was involved in getting supplies to people back there, if he ever did, then I was willing to leave his name out of it and indeed had no reason to single him out. But that was before these street signs were thought up. I can't imagine a more impotant gesture, and that's all it is...a "gesture", than street signs with "Assyrian" names. It's SUCH a loser's ploy and more than merely embarrassing...."we couldn't get "Assyria" itself so let's do the next best thing, let's NAME streets....in Kurdistan!!! And even though it's a stupid idea that deserves to join Aprim's books and Rosie'Malek's in the trash bin, there's something more sinister to it. Through the mindless proclamations of these nationalists and sob-sisters(by which I mean Aprim and not Rosie) we already have given the Kurds reason to resent and hold in suspicion the Christians we yell at to "DO SOMETHING". Not only do we have a fifth column potential or perception in Iraq but we've managed to develop a SIXTH column outside of Iraq! How's that for "work"? This hare-brained idea will do nothing productive or meaningful for anything the people there actually need. All it will do is antagonize Muslim neighbors...to be reminded, even after we would hope the anger and recrimination of war will fade, serving as a constant reminder that, once, Christians, the same religion which brought devastation and murder to Iraq, have sent money from the comfort of the same countries who waged this illegal war, to stick up road signs as a constant reminder of who did what to whom. So, if Firas is going to play at these sorts of things and seek attention and sign his name....then he deserves all the best and worst that can happen to that name. It's the height of irresponsibility to choose the day after your daughter is kidnapped by a "gang of inhuman monsters' to go on the airwaves and SAY SO! That's the time to negotiate quietly and sooth things...not inflame and muddy the waters and risk angering those who hold your darling child hostage....people could be forgiven for thinking such a parent wanted his child killed rather than saved...likewise with Firas and the street signs...it's hard to believe that this idiotic ploy is meant to benefit those being "held" by "vicious(as we claim) Muslims. Rather it seems intended to anger them all the more. I see this as another attempt to get more "martyrs"...to keep the Christians in Iraq in a continued state of exposure and insecurity and suspicion so that maybe, just maybe, it will become increasingly impossible for them to "join" as citizens of Kurdistan...as for years Aprim and Jassim and the rest have tried to make it impossible for Christians to remain loyal Iraqis. The more Kurds "mistreat" the Christians among them the better "chance" Aprim and now Jatou have of keeping the Christians "loyal to Assyria"...simply because they won't be allowed or feel comfortable joining in the larger society and concentrating on the actual welfare of their families and not worrying, or being used, to make a "presence" in Iraq for Firas and Jassim and Aprim and the rest of them who made sure to get the hell out and raise their children in peace and security and plenty. Shame on Firas...and if he doesn't feel it yet...I'll be glad to oblige. And let me go a step further....I got rid of my cousin Robert DeKelaita, who used to post his nonsense on AINA...I did it by a dirty trick, one that was used on me often enough; I named his wife and spoke unflatteringly of her...I knew that for all his so-called dedication to the Assyrian cause he would not tolerate, or be allowed to, attacks against his wife....it was cowardly but then these heroes won't come out in the open to fight fair...so fuck them. The most important thing is to get them to stop wherever and however possible. I knew his wife would not appreciate hearing herself maligned, no matter how "dedicated" her husband was...and sure enough, Robert stopped posting...which was all I wanted...I would have preferred if he'd carried on a reasoned debate and discussion..but these guys live by defaming those who challenge them, no matter how honest and reasonable the challenge...so if it's good enough for them to use, it's good enough for me. It isn't my preference...I'd far rather have a discussion with Firas on the merits...but he won't...and if the choice is no discussion, with Firas free to post and circulate whatever he feels like and telling the truth about his wife, then I'll post. If it's okay for him to post whatever he feels like, regardless of the impact on innocent people then it's okay for me to post whatever I "feel like". This is fair warning...I know his wife will take a rolling pin to his head if she once sees written the many things I've heard about her....but this is war too and if Firas supports his new government, which has no qualms about killing innocent Iraqi women, men and children, then why should his wife, or he, get off scot free? He can choose to avoid it by discussing openly the reasons behind this martyr-making ploy...it's up to him. Or Let him fold his tent up and go away. So far there have never been any consequences for the silly actions and words of these nationalists...they spew whatever they want and then blithely ban and delete all those who would discuss or disagree...it's time they felt some pain as well. --------------------- |
