...what would be most convincing would have been a "continuity of consciousness"....had the people claiming to be of direct Assyrian descent remembered their culture and language, even if they changed religions, all through the same centuries that the Hebrews kept theirs, for instance, there would be some basis for accepting their claims.

...no one has ever said that every last bit of Assyrian DNA was wiped out at the fall of empire...but whatever survived of genetic material, the actual awareness of who they were was lost to the Assyrians. They assimilated and intermarried, as they had always done in that region...and not until the Euros discovered the ruins did anyone, least of all the Nestorians, think to claim to be survivors of the ancient Assyrians.

...but the coup de grace to this ridiculous notion is the claim set forth by assyrians today that ONLY Christians can be Assyrians...this is patent nonsense and shows that this modern Assyrian business is merely bigotry against Muslims who are not allowed to be "Assyrian".
