a. We all know we have always called ourselves Suraye, not Aturaye....that only began since around WW I. b. Suraye is Syrian, by another name....and we know that Syrian and Syriac were written in place of Aramean and Aramaic by the Greeks of Alexandria way back when. c. Suraye/Syrian NEVER meant the people of Assyria proper. d. The nationalists, especially, have to account for the fact that we did not "always know we were Assyrian"...to do that they make strenuous efforts to make Syrian mean the "same as" Assyrian ( the "A" was lost etc.)...to which end they distort the historical record, cherry-pick and outright lie. e. On top of which we Nestorians began to call ourselves, not Assyrians first, but Chaldeans, thanks to the church of Rome missionaries who came to us in the 16th century looking for converts back to Roman Catholicism... f. For a couple of centuries those who returned to Rome AND those who remained Nestorian BOTH called themselves Chaldeans....one set was Catholic Chaldean and the other was Nestorian Chaldean...with no mention of Assyrian. g. It was only when, in the 19th century, the Assyrian ruins were uncovered and the cuneiform/Akkadian script deciphered that we got it into our heads, put there by the Euros, that those of us who had remained Nestorian Chaldeans would now be reborn as Assyrians....that was the first time any Nestorian referred to hisself that way. --------------------- |
