...the Right figured out long ago that the US Constitution is not their friend...how to get around it has been their main objective for at least two decades now. One tactic has been to make a big issue of "morality" figuring they could get the majority to go along. The trouble and the opportunity is that our Constitution does not allow religious morality to rule. By drumming up hysteria over the supposed "war against Christianity by Humanists", the Right has managed to instil in people´s minds the notion that our form of government is really a popularity contest...and the forces of "Christian morality" are the most popular...and therefore should become the law of the land..the law for all of us. That´s why they chose battles that could be decided by simple majorities and also why they lost every time Constitutional issues and protections were raised....in this latest duel before a Federal Appeals Judge the anti-Gay faction managed to present only two witnesses neither of whom were able to explain just what threat equal treatment for Gay Americans posed to anybody. But normally the Right doesn´t look for these kinds of venues where they can be challenged...like all hooligans they prefer to take to the streets and shout and confront and play on the emotions of the least educated and most fearful...and, with the help of the American educational establishment, they´ve managed to find a relibale majority of Americans easily led by such tactics, who all believe now that Law is a matter of popoularity...that Christian Law is always right because God is behind it...and those of us, and our Constitution, who dissent are heretics and disciples of the Devil etc. Of course the leaders of these factions don´t believe any of this nonsense...it just goes over well with the majority of the American people...and they have almost convinced politicians too that the "will of the people" trumps the Constituion and our Laws every time. Suc h are the uses of religion. --------------------- |
