...waffling though Zindalite I`m struck by how many times people say the world "must" recognize their Assyrian ancestry. But that`s the whole point; no one does...and for good reason. It`s fun to remember the painful posts in which Aprim would painfully explain how there were no such things as Chaldeans, that they were "invented" by the Catholic church in the 16th century...and were only a Catholic sect etc. And then Maggie went ape shit saying the designation "Assyrian" far antedated the term Chaldean....but that is not so. The Assyrians were also "invented"...only not by Rome but by archaeologists and then the Archbishop of Canterburry who was the first to use that term for the Nestorians....someone get Aprim to go back in history and find any instance, before the 19th century when anyone referred to HIMSELF as an Assyrian...go on, just do it. Actually Nestorians who joined Rome did call themselves Chaldeans...but they knew damn well it was just a name for their sect, based on their location...and the Ottoman government recognized them as a separate sect, without giving the same official recognition to the Nestorians or their patriarch. As much as Chaldeans were invented by Euros...so too were the Assyrians...only of the two, the Chaldeans were invented first..if that`s any consolation. --------------------- |
