...I can understand the dismay of Assyrian families running to Qurdistan for safety and finding out that everything there is in Qurdish, including the schools....where their kids had to know Arabic before, in the south, now they have to learn Qurdish in order to get an education....and while our kids in the north may already know the language, those from Baghdad and elsewhere in the south not so much. ...okay, I get it. This is the reason the call went out to help them get their own Assyrian-language schools complete with textbooks translated into our own language. I understand except it's still a mistake. For one thing did any Assyrian families coming to America insist their children attend Assyrian language schools? I think not. It's still the case that we will go anywhere, assimilate anywhere except in a Muslim country, even if it is our own...we still tell our kids, "stay away from dirty Muslims and murderous Qurds", except we're glad enough when the Qurds give us a safe-haven from the war that Christians brought! We're grateful but we don't want our children associating with their children, we don't want them learning their language or being educated in it even though when they graduate the entire country is run in that language. What gives the lie to all this "we must save the heritage so we don't disappear" is that we do nothing at all to save it where it is really in danger of being forgotten; in the Christian West....in fact we can't WAIT to be Americanized and prize our new citizenship beyond anything else...it comes back to religion for as long as we lose our "heritage", meaning language and culture, in a Christian country we don't mind...it is only among Muslims that we get all hot and botherd at the thought of its "disappearing"...and yet it has NEVER disappeared over there and never will because families teach the language to their children at birth and tell them all they can ever learn about their heritage, which they decidedly do NOT do here. It shows again that what is really meant by "Christianity saved us" is that it saved us from getting too close to Muslims! The truth is that we saved Christianity, as much as we could, against the odds and at a great price...but it NEVER saved us and in fact when we go to the West we LOSE our Assyrian identity, but that doesn't matter to us because we STAY Christian...which is all this has ever been about. --------------------- |
