..the Magpie sez... "We will work for the Kurds, with the Kurds, with ANY devil or demon to ease our people's suffering and get them what they need the most: A home of their own and self-determination!" ...this sounds very conciliatory and "realpolitik" on the surface...which is where all nationalists exist...but it too is a meaningless statement. The Kurds can be asked to allow the Christians of Kurdistan equal rights...but no way on earth they're going to give them , "A home of their own and self-determination". ...either they all like to talk horseshit cause it sounds good, and that's enough "action"...or they really and truly understand nothing. The Kurds have fought a long, bitter and protracted war against the central government for decades. They understand, like everyone else does, that you fight for these things in order to earn them, because often that's the ONLY preparation for being able to KEEP them. If you expect things to be handed to you, they can be taken away even easier. No modern nation on earth is going to give any citizens within its borders "self-determination" or a "home of their own"...especially not with oil under it. How could they? The most Assyrians in Kurdistan can expect in Kurdistan, and America, is that they be treated as equal citizens...America promises no group "self-determination" in America...and Black Americans have suffered far more in the last 200 years than Assyrians have...far, far more. Yet they wouldn't dream of asking for "self-determination"...they simply demanded their equal rights under a democractic government...which was "equal opportunity"...and that's all Assyrians can hope for in Kurdistan...and it's what they had in Iraq...it was their demands for SPECIAL guarantees that got them in trouble...but equal rights were already their's, including the right to be punished for engaging in sedition...as now they are paying for collaboration.. Magpie is making noises like she understands and is very frank and down to earth..but in the end it's the same pipe dream of getting something for free...something you never deserved..and something that will decidedly NOT be given to you just because you claim you "need" it. Let Magpie go fight in Kurdistan for decades if she wants to earn something there. Kurdistan right now is in the same predicament Iraq was at the close of the First World War...there is severe disruption, insecurity...all sorts of questions about what they will be able to have and do are floating in the air..and very little is assured...this is NOT the time to be bringing up YOUR needs...it is a time for pulling with everyone else to achieve the nation's future stability. Focusing on what the Christian minority needs, based on this assinine "we are Ashurbanipal's children", is another recipe for disaster...but that's okay by Magpie...cause when it comes she can tell you all that you failed HER... --------------------- |
