...gave the assyrians who came to him in Iraq when the Brits wanted to use us for their colonial police force known as the Levies.....he said exactly what these people are telling assyrians in Australia...get along, learn how to join, respect and prosper. We need to remember that the assyrians who caused the trouble in Iraq, in the years after WW I and leading up to Semele, were not native to Iraq. They were refugees whom Iraq had graciously accepted and protected and was even willing to settle in villages and on lands to be given them by the government of Iraq. They were assyrians from Turkey and Urmia who'd crapped in their own homes and countries and had to run for their lives as a consequence...they had fought against the Turks, their neighbors and fellow countrymen, in the pay of and for the British, who were the enemies of the Ottomans...in other words, they were traitors and they and their families paid the price....but they didn't stop there. Iraq took them in (including my father's family) and no sooner were they safe and welcomed (as much as any poor people welcome other poor people who are thrown on them as refugees) than they turned around and did the same damn things that got them chased out of their previous homes: they once again took money and guns from the same British who'd just "betrayed" them and again turned those guns on their neighbors, their new neighbors....they killed Iraqis for the British and when the British left what did they expect? Gratitude from Iraq? If assyrian "refugees" in Australia do one-tenth of what they did in Iraq, they will find out, finally, that it was NEVER for what assyrians ARE, that brought them so much trouble and misery but for what they DID. Yes, they ARE responsible for the way they have been treated....let them do the same in Australia and they will see what it gets them. --------------------- |
