In debates with Christians I often hear that Christians have an absolute moral code whereas atheists must make it up as they go along...that their morality is relative to the time and age and not "eternally god-given" as is theirs. This is pure bunkum.

First of all, which Christianity? If Christianity is so absolute, why are there innumerable sects and variations? Is this god's doing, or "relativist" man's?

And, when? Christians are now toying with the idea that Gay love and marriage may be ok after all...same with women priests, not to mention all sorts of other things which used to be taboo but are now either ok or left alone....how is that "absolute moral law"?

Turns out that the Church also evolves, changes and supposedly grows...just as does civil society, although the Church has to be dragged kicking and screaming to its reforms.

So Christian morals aren't written in stone after all...they are as subject to change as civil laws are....but there IS a real difference between the two. You can break any number of god's laws, even his "eternal absolute moral laws" and get away with it by simply recanting, or confessing and mumbling some words...even for horrendous crimes, you can get out of god's moral absolute punishments for sins and crimes.

But, not with civil law...there is no mumbling of words that will get you off..there is no forgiving your crime, under civil law, until you've served your punishment....punishment under civil law is as near absolute as you can get.

So, let's not hear any more that Christian morals are superior because they come from god...they may come from god, but they are far inferior, in terms of personal responsibility and civil justice, from civil law.

What kind of society would it be if people knew they could commit rape and theft and murder and be "forgiven" by mumbling words? How would that impose any restraint on citizens? To the contrary; knowing I can escape punishment after a rape, by seeking god's forgiveness, I might think I can get away with rape or any other crime. It is only in civil law that I KNOW I'll be punished...that is an ABSOLUTE and it comes to us, not thanks to god, but to sensible humans.
