...I've had some incorrect views of masochism, for one. I always thought masochists deriving "pleasure" from pain meant they actually smiled...felt joy etc. But they don't...they suffer, they definitely feel pain and cringe and the rest of it, but they LIKE that feeling. Then there's sado-masochism, specifically the kind where someone likes grovelling at the feet of another person who is literally wielding a whip over them, forcing them to crawl and abase themselves, kiss the hand of the tormentor and ultimately become their tormentor's willing slave....especially where any kind of sexual gratification can be derived....who would want such things? Hitchens answered that for me nicely when he pointed out that religion is essentially a sado-masochistic relationship wherein one is ordered, yes ordered, to love someone whom at the same time they are taught to fear. Bingo! Loving the person, or rather being forced to feel love for the person, who will also punish your slightest transgression (and you can be assured that there WILL be transgressions and therefore guaranteed punishment), is indeed the whole sado-masochistic fetish in a nutshell, no pun intended. "Have you been bad?", the Lady or Man with the whip and the pseudo Medieval executioners regalia asks, in a threatening voice filled with the thrilling promise of the lash...though it could as easily be a hooded priest asking the question..."how BAD?', this authority figure asks again...."Oh, I have been very very naughty"...replies the cringing but now eager penitent...it's the Catholic confessional all over again only with even more bizarre costumes and regalia...and the writhing of the sinner is as delicious to him or her as the cringing and usually naked "penitent" in a Greenwhich Village flat...as he gets his bottom spanked by a Lusty Lady avenger. ....Jesus Christ! --------------------- |
