...that's really what it is, that and the trial of America. For those of us wondering why Martin didn't also have the right to stand his ground and defend himself against Zimmerman, as Zimmerman says he had a right to...the answer is clear: America is color-blind when it suits its purpose...the rest of the time, like picking on Martin solely because he is of color, America refuses to "see color"....as if Zimmerman would have followed a white kid NOT wearing a hoody. According to white America a grown man following a young Black kid, by car and then on foot, isn't "provoking" that kid, isn't presenting a threat of the use of force...he's just following. A white kid may not be alarmed at that, or get pissed off, but a Black kid sees it differently, because white America has taught him that lesson. These laws were drafted by white men...for THEIR world and don;t take into account the reality that Blacks live in. A Black kid in Martin's position has every good reason to feel fear, to fear that great bodily harm might very well be around the corner and so react accordingly...Zimmerman said he was in fear of what MIGHT come next, what the next punch might do to him so that even if his injuries don't show much force or damage, it was reasonable for him to fear that a future blow, or lucky punch, might do great damage..and so he didn't have to wait for that to happen before defending himself, even from what MIGHT happen but hadn't happened yet. This is where a Black prosecutor might have been able to make the point better, because he knows what the reality for Blacks in racist America still is. Martin also had no idea of what as to come next..what Zimmerman may have had on his mind, so maybe he too decided not to wait to find out, but to act to prevent the possibility even of great harm....the court says that Zimmerman had good reason to fear, in which case you wonder why he put himself in that position to begin with, because he was already in a fight....but, was Martin supposed to wait for Zimmerman to get physical? Wasn't the fact that Zimmerman was following him enough of a threat or promise of great harm to come? And it did, didn't it? --------------------- |
