There is something endearingly goofy in those teevee ads that sell medicines with a hundred side-effects worse than what ails you. I see in them a metaphor for American society. Over the image, the outward show, of a smiling couple romping through the fields without a care in the world and well dressed and fed too, runs a scroll listing all the things they may well come to suffer from...Americans, in their search for their "dream" run a good risk of dying on the way from side-effects they inflict on themselves...and we smile all the way there.
